摘要:

Most nervous systems in warm blood animals cannot regenerate in adult. The loss of regenerative capacity of the nervous system exacerbates symptoms associated with aging and neurodegeneration. The mammalian olfactory system is an exception. It regenerates throughout the lifespan of the animals. In response to normal aging or injuries, the stem cells in the olfactory epithelium can regenerate the entire neuroepithelium, and the newly generated neurons can project long axons to their brain targets. A deep understanding of the mechanism underlying this regenerative capacity may help us reactivate the process in other nervous systems and provide a potential treatment of neurodeneration. Here I will share some new findings about the developmental origin of the olfactory stem cells and how they contribute to the plasticity in the olfactory neural circuits.
