Core Introduction

The Cryo-EM Core at CIMR is dedicated to providing high-quality structural biology and bioimaging technical support services for biomedical and clinical research. Key focus areas include macromolecular cryo-sample preparation, preliminary cryo-EM screening and structural evaluation, and ultrastructural observation of tissues and cells.

The Core is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, including transmission electron microscope , Vitrobot cryo-sample preparation systems, and related sample pretreatment equipment. We offer comprehensive services spanning sample quality assessment, negative staining/cryo-sample preparation, grid screening, data collection, data processing, and user training. In response to personalized user needs, the facility actively collaborates with research teams to develop and optimize electron microscopy sample preparation and imaging methods.

 

Open Positions: Cryo-EM Technical Engineer

Main Responsibilities

  1. Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Responsible for the daily operation, routine maintenance, and servicing of the transmission electron microscope and associated peripheral equipment to ensure stable operation and optimal performance.
  2. Cryo-Sample Preparation: Proficiently operate Vitrobot and other cryo-sample preparation equipment; assist and guide users in negative staining and cryo-sample preparation (vitrification) of biological macromolecules.
  3. Tissue & Cellular EM Observation: Responsible for ultrastructural electron microscopy observation of biological samples (tissues, cells, etc.), and assist with or participate in sample pretreatment and ultrathin sectioning.
  4. Technical Training & User Support: Conduct daily operational training, assessments, and management of autonomous user access, providing professional technical support and guidance to researchers.
  5. Workflow Optimization & Collaboration: Assist the facility director and technical team in optimizing experimental workflows to improve screening efficiency and image data quality.
  6. Routine Facility Management: Participate in daily administrative management, including purchasing reagents/consumables, equipment inventory management, laboratory safety, and environmental upkeep.
  7. Other Tasks: Complete other duties and assignments designated by facility leadership.

Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree or above in Biology, Medicine, Biophysics, Materials Science, Electron Microscopy, or related disciplines.
  2. Familiarity with the fundamental principles and operation of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) or Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM); hands-on experience with Talos series microscopes or Vitrobot sample preparation is preferred.
  3. Solid laboratory skills, with proficiency in conventional biological sample preparation (e.g., negative staining, ultrathin sectioning) or cryo-sample preparation.
  4. Excellent communication skills and service mindset, with the patience to collaborate with and instruct research personnel.
  5. High degree of responsibility, attention to detail, strong team spirit, and a professional work ethic.
  6. Proficient in English reading and writing, with the ability to comprehend English instrument manuals and technical documentation.
