Research Interests

Zhang Lab is focusing on:

1. basic science studies on the etiologies, pathogenesis, pathophysiological changes of cardiovascular diseases.

2. cardiovascular organoids and organ-on-a-chip, utilizing advanced 3D bioprinting, stem-cell-derived, or tissue-engineered models to mimic human heart and vessel physiology for improved disease modeling, drug testing, and personalized treatment. 

3. development and translation of innovative technologies for early diagnosis and minimally invasive management of cardiovascular diseases. Two of our novel devices are currently under investigation with multi-center clinical trials.

Major Contributions
1. First use of a new negative pressure system for prevention and management of vascular surgical wound complications
2. Developed a new technique using physician modified re-constrainable endograft system for complex abdominal and thoracoabdominal aneurysms
3. Invented ZIPPER stentgraft system for mini-invasive total transfemoral endovascular repair of aortic arch pathologies
4. Invented a novel percutaneous stenting system for mini-invasive endovascular treatment of carotid stenosis
5. Invented an endovascular aneurysm repair covered stent system to prevent endoleaks
